Choosing colours for your bridesmaid dresses & overall colour scheme.
Choosing your wedding theme and colours is one of the most important steps in your planning process. It’s an extension of your personal style as a couple, but also can make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your wedding. Once you know your colours you can start to gather fabric swatches and decide how your bridesmaids dresses will fit into the grand colour scheme of your big day.
Consider the time of year.
One of the first points of call when deciding your colour scheme is to look at the season you will be having the wedding in. For a winter wedding, dark jewel tones are stunning. Or spring, which lends itself to muted pastel tones, and of course autumn, complimented with bold warm hues of red and orange. While none of these ‘rules’ are set in stone, it’s definitely a good starting point when thinking about your base colour.
Think about your favourite colour
It seems obvious, but maybe not always the first thought. A lot of brides will think of colours they “should” have for their wedding, colours that are considered traditional or classic. There’s nothing wrong with going in this direction but there’s also nothing wrong with bringing your own personal style and taste into the scheme. If your favourite colour is fluorescent neon yellow, barbie pink, black, or any colour - you can find a way to incorporate this to showcase your personality.
Pick flattering colours
You may not have officially asked your bridesmaids yet, but you must have an idea of who you’d ask, right? Think about their style and the colours they wear in their own outfits. The bridesmaids’ dresses are a huge part of showcasing your colour theme, and you want your girls to be comfortable in a colour that will flatter them, so this could be a great starting point if you are struggling to come up with colour ideas.
Use a variety of colours
The idea of a ‘two-toned’ wedding colour scheme is in the past. One of the biggest trends right now is a varied colour palette, with accents and hints of different colours throughout. Your bridesmaids’ dresses are no exception, why not ask your girls to wear different shades of the same colour, this really adds a depth to your colour scheme, as well as giving visual interest to your photos and overall making it easier to source matching decorations and accessories.
Think about the venue.
Finally, if you’ve set a date and chosen your venue, this may play a part in deciding your colour scheme. Some venues have their own décor which you must work around, such as upholstery, carpet, wallpaper. Make sure the colours you choose will compliment your surroundings and this will give a cohesive look to your wedding.
